This one is a keeper! We got this armoire from my husband’s parents house. I have no idea how old it is, but I have a feeling it might be from Mexico. My mother-in-law and her family are from Guadalajara. This armoire has beautifully intricate carvings that were just getting lost. I did some digging and have found out some meaning behind the intricate carvings on this armoire. The 2-headed bird, known in Hindu mythology as “Berunda” represents rebirth and resurrection thought to possess magical and immense strength. The lions, of which there are five, symbolize strength, royalty, and bravery and have been an important symbol for thousands of years. Dogs are guardians of “the way between” and cross through the boundary between the worlds. And then the golden ” key” represents spiritual power and unlocks all doors. It also represents liberation, knowledge and mysteries. And there you have it. A short lesson in ancient mythology! Oh yes, I used Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint to enhance the carvings. A slight sanding and then hemp oil over all and a dark wax to preserve everything.
